While the role of fathers in their sons’ lives is widely acknowledged, the profound and enduring impact fathers have on their daughters often goes unrecognized. Fathers play a crucial role in shaping their daughters’ emotional well-being, relationships, and professional success.
Beyond providing a model for future relationships, fathers act as guides, helping their daughters navigate a society that, despite progress, remains largely male-dominated. They serve as interpreters, helping their daughters understand the often complex and unspoken language of men. These and many other roles that fathers play are invaluable, as Dr. David Miller will present during this provocative and critical conversation about the Sacred Relationship of Fathers and Daughters.
Yet, that relationship is often overlooked.
When a father is absent from a girl’s life, the consequences can be devastating. In her book, Whatever Happened to Daddy’s Little Girl? The Impact of Fatherlessness on Black Women, jonetta rose barras explores the far-reaching effects of father absence. She was the first African American woman to define The Fatherless Woman Syndrome, identifying key psychological and emotional challenges. Those factors will be discussed by barras in the conversation between her and Dr. Miller.
The afternoon also includes the testimonial of author Amuchechukwu Nwafor about her decade-long struggle to deal with the absence of her father. It is a moving story of episodes of severe self-harm that ultimately through hard emotional work placed her on a journey of self-celebration.
Dr. Tracie Robinson begins the day with a powerful self-care workshop that includes the use of healing oils, foods and physical movements.
A Sacred Relationship: Fathers and Daughters is presented by Esther Productions Inc., in partnership with the Black Student Fund, Essences of Wellness Authentic Transformation LLC. and the Tenley-Friendship Public Library, Washington, DC.
