This thread is so old. It also reveals immaturity of the MB more than anything. Why is this worth boasting about? If you are told that a new MB called for reference, yes, the MB also has that info too!! She knows what you know which is that she called for a reference. Wow. So what. The new MB is being evaluated? Of course. During the interview process, both sides are being interviewed.
However, the parent looking to hire a good nanny, knows NOT to directly ask the nannies if they'll clean the house. They know better than that. They're more comfortable asking former employers to see what scheme they can get away with. Little do these scheming mothers know that good nanny families WILL warn their beloved former nannies.
The way I see it, you are expected to work at your job. When the kids are young, you either play or clean the house. If MB expects you to clean (beyond the mess created by children), then she is cheating herself out of hours that her kids can be interacting with an adult and general attention and interaction. If your charges are older and you just want to sit around instead of making yourself useful by helping around the house, you don't deserve the job. She's not being sneaky. She's asking if you are a hard worker. If you are either not a hard worker or don't want to be a hard worker, then it's best for all if you don't take the job. Go find another job where you can slack off.
My NF is into hiring professionals, a professional nanny AND a professional cleaning staff. Sorry.
