OP here - Just thought I would update you all on the dramatic turn of events. Wednesday I attempted to keep track of items in my head but when I got home it became very apparent that I couldn't. My cupboards are well stocked so I decided to take dozens of photos on my digital camera in my bathroom and kitchen closet and cabinets. I also placed a certain amount of quarters in the change jar which we set up for my daughter once she gets older and heads off to college. My nanny knows this.I took a photo of the top just to be certain. I did this at night prior to my nanny's arrival in the morning. My husband was well aware of my plan. When I got home I checked the change jar and it's clear she had not taken any money because the photo matched the way it looked when I got home. I also kept in mind that she could have possibly used items for cooking and what not but it's evident that she has been budgeting by 'shopping' at my home on my expense. I took many many photos and compared EVERYTHING. I was, and still am very hurt and heartbroken. She is very good at it and even took cans of vegetables that cost less than a dollar. I have dozens of cans and would have never noticed. I was pretty confident at this point that she was stealing (or at the very least, having people over without permission although I never had any indication of her having someone over). She has probably been doing it since she started, that's how good she is at it. I asked my husband to call her since he hires and fires people for a living and is much better at confrontation. He handled it very professional and told her that there is evidence to indicate that she has been stealing. She asked what evidence and then tried to deny stealing anything and he reminded her that she had been the only one in the house. She then got quiet again and hung up. I have a headache, literally. Thankfully I have wonderful relatives who will fill in temporarily.
I'm glad you found out and fired her. I know a nanny thief I wish I could out because her behavior is so abhorrent to me, but I can't for various reasons. She's also a compulsive and believable liar.
