If you are a single parent, please do not expect a young person from overseas to take the place of a second parent. That is way too much for someone that age. If you really need that kind of relationship for your child, then an au pair is NOT the right choice for you. I have had several great au pairs over the years and love the program. But you have to know when it fits your situation and when it doesn’t.
 No one is expecting an aupair to actually *be* a second parent. Sometimes that role means someone to drop off the kid at soccer while the other parent picks up. I think an aupair can handle that. I would't want an aupair actually being responsible for raising my children but as a single parent, I think one can contribute to the day to day logistics and support children would typically get from a second parent in a household w/o an aupair. I mean, cooking, bed making, kid laundry and running kids to soccer practice is still blessed by the aupairs as tasks they will complete, right?
I am a single parent - and I do think the AP functions as the back-up parent for me -she does more or as much as many of the fathers/husbands of more than a few of my friends and family, actually. Within a 35-40 hour week she takes DD to three IP lessons; sits with her on 3 or more zoom sessions, feeds her lunch, gives her bath, does her hair, and puts her clothes away. She's taken her to the dentist and to the doctor at least once. I only get older au pairs. I am not sure what you thing the right choice would be - I need a specific language that is not available in the local nanny pool.
