I have had several great au pairs over the years and love the program. But you have to know when it fits your situation and when it doesn’t.
No one is expecting an aupair to actually *be* a second parent. Sometimes that role means someone to drop off the kid at soccer while the other parent picks up. I think an aupair can handle that. I would't want an aupair actually being responsible for raising my children but as a single parent, I think one can contribute to the day to day logistics and support children would typically get from a second parent in a household w/o an aupair. I mean, cooking, bed making, kid laundry and running kids to soccer practice is still blessed by the aupairs as tasks they will complete, right?
