As a side note, although I frequently see the "week's pay for every year of service" rule of thumb on here, I've never heard of anyone receiving it among my nanny friends. I've also never received that, as a year end bonus or as a bonus when the families and I part ways.
You get a bonus when you part ways? How much? Didn't know that was a thing, thought you would just get last 1 or 2 weeks pay or whatever it is.
It's actually more of a severance rule of thumb; it's supposed to help encourage the nanny to stay with you until your end date, and help her over any time before a new job starts. Some people also give it as a farewell bonus, particularly if the nanny stays until the family's end date.
Like a lot of nanny traditions, this one dates more from when you might have had a lifetime servant, instead of a nanny for just a couple of years. This would have been a retirement bonus, and would have been more like half a year's pay or more.
