Ah, I initially missed the part about how two out of the three children will be going to preschool in the fall, and possibly summer camps too. So you all not only want to pay her $25 a day to take care of an infant in addition to two other children, but you also want to drop her like a hot potato a few months later. Suck it up, pay her a fair wage. I don't care whether it's "normal for your neighborhood" (which I doubt) or not. You're taking advantage of her and you know it. Since you asked, no, your proposal for the addition of the third child is not fair. No, you should not reduce your rate further. If the other family wants to guarantee the nanny's availability, they need to pay for it. As for compensation for adding a third child to the share, the minimum additional raise you should feel right offering is $5/hour. That begs the question, of course -- what's in it for you and the other family? Nothing, I suppose, which is why people rarely do 3-family shares. Unless you're screwing the nanny, it doesn't save the families any money.
If we are currently offering $650 a week / 40 hrs = 16.25 hr. and we add $5 hr for the 3rd child, we get a rate of $850 for the week. When she has all 3 kids, our proposed rate actually gives her more than this, its only on the school vacations (winter break, spring break, etc) when she will not have 1-2 of the other kids that she will make $650. They are proposing to guarantee her availability with $650 a week and pay her more when they use additional hours.
