Wow. You say you're a fed, but I really, really hope you are not paying this poor woman these wages in the Wash DC area.

No, no, no and no. I say this from an employer's perspective (I'm an employer in a nanny share). This woman needs a constant base pay, the other mom's shouldn't get to "adjust" the amount they pay based on their inconsistent usage. How would you like it if you're employer cut your weekly pay by the same percentage, regardless of the number of hours you showed up to work?

A good analogy is daycare. You are paying to reserve the nanny's time, like you pay at daycare to reserve your child's crib/spot. You pay the same rate whether baby attends or not.

I know child care is expensive, but man, it sounds like your nanny is being exploited. Was it the nanny's idea to add the 3rd child?

I don't think adding the third child is the bad part of this deal, but you really need to rethink cutting the amount you and the other family pay. And I think it's really unfair to allow the other parents to cut her weekly take home based on their schedules. If she's available for X hours a week, that's what you pay her for, whether you use them or not. That's how it works.

She has been with me for 3.25 years. She started at $300 from me and then went to $350 after 2 yrs. We are also generous with vacation time and bonuses. The other family started at $300 and she has only been with them for 1.25 yrs, so she hasnt gotten a raise from them. That salary is very consistent with our area.

The nanny is interested in having a 3rd kid. She is happy and eager to take it on. The bigger 2 kids will be attending preschool in the fall and (thankfully) are happy and easy toddlers. The baby will give her continuity with a new family after our kids leave and will give her extra income throughout the rest of this year.

We are giving her a triple stroller.

She works 36 hrs a week with half days on Fridays. She really likes this schedule and with other families who would pay more, she'd have to work longer hours and could not get home to her grandkids.

I work for the feds and have a consistent schedule so I am happy to pay a flat rate every week regardless of how many hours I use bc I don't take a lot of vacation. the other 2 moms work for schools so they have more time off, which is why they are willing to guarantee a minimum weekly rate but don't want to be obligated to pay the full amount when they have the entire week off.

The nanny is now making $650 a week for 2 kids.
With 3 kids, she will range from the same min of $650 (when she has 1-2 kids) to a high of $870-900 a week (when she has all 3 kids full time).

Also, during the last 3 years, she often took care of a 3rd kid on a drop-in basis 8-15 hrs a week to supplement her income and was eager and happy to do so. So having a 3rd kid is not new or a burden, its her choice. There was a baby that was very difficult and she told us she was uncomfortable with that situation and we told the parents that she couldn't come anymore. It is always her choice. It was not until we made it a full-time situation (now) that she discussed any reduction or restructure of the current payment options to benefit us.

So you all not only want to pay her $25 a day to take care of an infant in addition to two other children, but you also want to drop her like a hot potato a few months later.

Suck it up, pay her a fair wage. I don't care whether it's "normal for your neighborhood" (which I doubt) or not. You're taking advantage of her and you know it.

Since you asked, no, your proposal for the addition of the third child is not fair. No, you should not reduce your rate further. If the other family wants to guarantee the nanny's availability, they need to pay for it. As for compensation for adding a third child to the share, the minimum additional raise you should feel right offering is $5/hour.

That begs the question, of course -- what's in it for you and the other family? Nothing, I suppose, which is why people rarely do 3-family shares. Unless you're screwing the nanny, it doesn't save the families any money.

If we are currently offering $650 a week / 40 hrs = 16.25 hr. and we add $5 hr for the 3rd child, we get a rate of $850 for the week.

When she has all 3 kids, our proposed rate actually gives her more than this, its only on the school vacations (winter break, spring break, etc) when she will not have 1-2 of the other kids that she will make $650.

They are proposing to guarantee her availability with $650 a week and pay her more when they use additional hours.

This is ridiculous. You don't want us to comment on the low pay, but you're asking us if we think it's fair that you lower her pay even more? No, this is crazy.
