I've been stuck in these low income positions before because I always want to help these women. It usually not their fault they are in these situations, its their ex-boyfriend/husband that left them high and dry. And it's surely not the kids fault, so I like to try to give those kids a leg up in life, but boy do I wish I had some money for myself sometimes. Also side note these kids are usually the nicest, most polite, thoughtful, gracious kids ever who appreciate everything you do for them or buy for them. Unlike the brats of "rich" parents who don't even acknowledge you got them anything for their birthday because it wasn't as memorable as their $200 lego sets.
Then why charge her anything at all? Start a charity and work for free. That'd be great. But don't excuse someone trying to hire another person (who is also worthy of your compassion) at illegally low rates. It's bad for the industry in general and feeds the idea that you don't have to pay for quality childcare. Nannies are not charity workers. They are employees working for a living, and your personal issues should not be her weight to bear.
