Why not just go with a full day preschool program? I know you and your son love your nanny, but it might be time for a new childcare solution. Or do you like the idea of your child having "lazy home days" and then more structured preschool days? Then you'll have to stay with this solution for another year or so. An au pair is less expensive each week, but there are other costs (the agency fee, etc) and you also have a young adult living with you. In your house. Always. Not everyoen is ready to have another person in their home that they must "manage" and even to a tiny extent (depending on the au pair and the issues) "parent". I couldn't do it, but many do. Also remember usually your au pair will be with you only 1 year, so you must get a new one every year, which means you search for a new one, have the transition to learnign someone new, etc.
OP here. full day preschool sounds most likely (we live in an older house that doesn't have a ton of extra space, so an au pair would be uncomfortable). I know this sounds weird, but one of the reasons we are staying with our nanny is that we feel so loyal to her and cannot imagine getting rid of her. She has been wonderful in helping us raise our son and has become like part of the family.
