Another MB here who believes that employees don't give employers gifts. However, I have a longtime nanny who really likes celebrating birthdays. She and DD always make me something and she insists on a free sitting voucher for an after work HH with my friends (single mom). It's a sweet gesture, but not at all necessary. Yes, I do give her a gift on her birthday. I may not be a birthday person, but she is, and she is generous and a fantastic nanny and it makes me and DD happy to celebrate her.
I can understand your point, but as a nanny who has had long time assignments, I feel it's a case by case decision. I worked with a family for over 5 years, and I've given one of my MB's presents (flowers, perfume she complimented me on, some of my paintings, which she boasts about to everyone). We had that kind of relationship, and it's the way I was raised. When I regard you as family, I treat you as such. I've also worked with some employers that didn't get the same treatment. With those, I restrict the gift giving to the kids, and have the kids work on presents for them.
