I always buy MB flowers, no gift/card. I've been with the family 6 years.

However, I have a longtime nanny who really likes celebrating birthdays. She and DD always make me something and she insists on a free sitting voucher for an after work HH with my friends (single mom). It's a sweet gesture, but not at all necessary.

Yes, I do give her a gift on her birthday. I may not be a birthday person, but she is, and she is generous and a fantastic nanny and it makes me and DD happy to celebrate her.

I can understand your point, but as a nanny who has had long time assignments, I feel it's a case by case decision. I worked with a family for over 5 years, and I've given one of my MB's presents (flowers, perfume she complimented me on, some of my paintings, which she boasts about to everyone). We had that kind of relationship, and it's the way I was raised. When I regard you as family, I treat you as such. I've also worked with some employers that didn't get the same treatment. With those, I restrict the gift giving to the kids, and have the kids work on presents for them.

I've always just said Happy Birthday and made them a batch of brownies or a baked good.

I'm an MB. A heartfelt card is plenty, and very nice.

And another MB saying that I'd truly prefer NOT to receive gifts from our nanny. It always feels awkward and unnecessary. I think a card is plenty (and not even necessary) though mentioning the b'day is nice.

Facilitating the kids making a card or gift or something is lovely.

You can also always bake something w/ the kids.

But don't worry about the gift thing.

Op here: thanks for all of the advice especially the moms. I think I will keep it casual and just tell her Happy Birthday. Also, i never said I offer my services for free, another nanny mentioned that, I would never do that hehe
