Employer here looking for feedback. My nanny started a week before her birthday. Even though we had only known her a week, we gave her handmade card from the kids and a gift certificate for $100 to Home Depot, since she and her DH had just bought their first house and she was telling me how they were DIYing things on weekends. Then, this Christmas after she has been with us for 7 months, we gave her a nice Coach wallet (about $150), Christmas card made by DD, plus a week's salary as a bonus. Both times, she said "Thanks" and that was the end of it. I didn't expect her to fall all over us, but I thought both gestures were thoughtful and I was surprised by how uninterested she seemed. Am I expecting too much?
That is an unusually toned down response IMO. It lacks verve and vitality. However, if I've learned anything about people, it's that they're weird. Maybe she was surprised and flustered, maybe up until recently she'd been a Johovah's Witness and doesn't know how to handle birthday gifts, maybe she's just socially awkward. I was about 25 or 26 before I found out it's rude to not open a gift when someone gives it to you. Giving gifts should feel good. If it doesn't feel good when her next birthday rolls around, then give less.
