And as far as my experience goes, a first birthday is not that big of a deal because you don't have a child eagerly anticipating presents and a party and what not, so there's no buzz before a birthday. As for the other thing, it does seem like you have a bigger issue, and if you're truly worried she's favouring your older child, you need to have a conversation with her. And as others said, I don't think you should mention the birthday. If I'm honest, I am not entirely sure when my 6mo's birthday is - and I was with the three older kids while he was being born! Been with that family for 3 years and love them all dearly, but with them all, my own family and friends, and my previous charges that I keep in touch with, it's a lot of birthdays to remember, and sometimes I'm a day or a week late.
