new mb here. I have been guilty of this with my part-time nanny. she is an angel and never complained. Now, i realize this is hard on the nanny. Would it be fair to pay a nanny half time for the hours you don't need her to come in?
How many hours a week is she working for you? PT jobs can be different - some PT nannies are flexible, others are desperately depending on the income. Talk to your nanny, let her know you realize now that this was inappropriate and unfair to her, and ask her what arrangement suits her best. When I was in college and a PT nanny I didn't care. When I had finished college, I cared a LOT. We can't say how your nanny feels, you'll have to talk to her. However, if she agrees that a guaranteed number of hours per week is important to her (which it probably is) then you should pay her full wages for all the hours you've booked her time. If you call the day before to cancel half of the next work day, she can't fill that time with another job - she's out what could be, to her, a big chunk of her income. It's fair to pay her full hourly rate for all the hours you have asked her to reserve on her calendar for you and your family.
