Domestic employers are only required to withhold FICA (social security and medicare). They can withhold state and federal income taxes, but are not required to by law.
Hi, op here so do you mean is that okay if I don’t pay fedral and state taxes?
8.32 here. You didn't answer my question. Did your employer withhold any state or federal taxes? If they did, you need to fill out a new W4 and withhold more per week. Additionally, you need to set up a payment plan with the amount you owe the irs this tear because too little was withheld. If they didn't withhold anything except fica (and they don't have to, as PP pointed out...), you should have had a pay stub each week showing just fica was withheld, and you should have been setting some aside each week. If that's the case, figure out how much you should be withholding per week for 2018, multiply by 52, divide by your remaining number of paychecks this year, and find a way to make the remainder work with your budget. You might want to sit down with a friend who is good with numbers, see if they can help you figure this out. No, you can't just not pay your taxes, and you only get a return if you overpay federal and/or state taxes. Actually, it's better to pay exactly what you should, that way you have your money available when you need it, and you don't have this situation at tax time.
