Did your employer withhold ANY state or local taxes? If not, you need to figure out how much to set aside each week and send in a check once each quarter.

Op here, my employer withheld only ( FICA taxes)
Yes , I agree with all posts who blame me. It’s my mistake.
I was working as private contractor and used to do 1099.
It’s fist time I am dealing with w/2.

If you filed with 1099 previously, you understand that you are responsible for state and federal taxes, so why this boloney now?!

I have spent a lot of time trying to explain how taxes work to her, providing her contacts of people who can help in her native language, explained how to fill out a w-4 etc. we use a payroll service so provide very accurate pay stubs, withhold state and federal on her behalf etc. and she still had problems this year and was shocked when she owed a bit of money.

I’m sure anyone can go online and read how the tax system works in any language or find a resource. Why are these nannies not taking responsibility to educate themselves!!?? I just find it so unprofessional.

+1. Nanny here and I agree with this MB. MB/DB are employers, not your parents. As an adult you should know what will happen with filling taxes. If you don’t, educate yourself. Where I live ( IL) I fill out what I want my employers to deduct ( i can choose which party will report federal and state taxes). It’s on me if something isn’t filed correctly. If a nanny wants to be treated like a mature porgies soon all, they need to start acting like one.

You know the answer. She's hoping you'll offer to pay the bill.

Hi, op here so do you mean is that okay if I don’t pay fedral and state taxes?

8.32 here. You didn't answer my question. Did your employer withhold any state or federal taxes?

If they did, you need to fill out a new W4 and withhold more per week. Additionally, you need to set up a payment plan with the amount you owe the irs this tear because too little was withheld.

If they didn't withhold anything except fica (and they don't have to, as PP pointed out...), you should have had a pay stub each week showing just fica was withheld, and you should have been setting some aside each week. If that's the case, figure out how much you should be withholding per week for 2018, multiply by 52, divide by your remaining number of paychecks this year, and find a way to make the remainder work with your budget.

You might want to sit down with a friend who is good with numbers, see if they can help you figure this out. No, you can't just not pay your taxes, and you only get a return if you overpay federal and/or state taxes. Actually, it's better to pay exactly what you should, that way you have your money available when you need it, and you don't have this situation at tax time.

No. Your employers only have to withhold social security and medicare. You have to pay whatever you owe. Did you fill out a W-4 when you started?

Have you tried online tax preparation software? It's usually free in certain income brackets and you can play with it to see what, if any, deductions you might be eligible for. Does your mom have a job/income of her own? If not and you've been supporting her, you may be able to claim her as a dependent.

What expenses do you think you can deduct? Unless you have a slew of unreimbursed expenses you were REQUIRED to purchase for your position, a huge mortgage payment, medical bills and/or student loans? You’re not likely to get rid of all 4K, let alone get a return... Out of curiosity, why didn’t you realize when you got your pay stubs?

Hi ,
First thanks for reading my post. I really need your advice.
I just started working as nanny( it’s almost year ago)
My employer told me they are going to take taxes from my pay check.
I was okay with that( unfortunately, I had not lot of knowledge about taxes)
Now, they provide me w/2.
I expected tax return. I went to tax preparation office.
They told me I have to pay almost $4000. Which is Fedral and State taxes.
They took only social security and Medicare taxes from my pay checks.
I was shocked. I was expecting tax return.
I know it’s my mistake that I was not aware about different type of taxes.
Please help me ( is there any way I pay less if I put my expenses )
Thanks
