Most daycare employees make $10.00/hr. What do you expect?
I expect any adult hired to work with children to be loving and attentive. However, as another now-nanny who worked in Bright Horizons daycare centers, I know that is not the case. In fact, some daycare workers, while all smiles and sunshine when the parents are around, are downright cruel when the parents aren't around. This is why daycare centers don't have "Nanny Cameras" for the parents to peek in during the day. OP, you know the right thing here. Get a nanny or stay home.
The PP is exactly right. It is not reasonable to expect to attract someone loving and attentive for $10 an hour. Because at that rate, if the caregiver is educated and great and knows what she is doing, then she can make more elsewhere. Which means the pool of people in a typical daycare STARTS with folks who are either NOT educated, NOT great caregivers or who do NOT know what they are doing. Your best case scenario is that they are kind and loving but didn't have the chance to get any formal education but they have reasonable common sense. Then you take that person who is relying on her good attitude and reasonable common sense to do the job well, and put her into the lifestyle she can afford at $10 an hour--she is constantly overworks and overstressed. How long until she is less responsive to her multiple or in some cases many charges? How long until she starts making stupid mistakes and/or cutting corners because she is just so tired?
