The in-home places were even more depressing to me. Some of the people I spoke to were incredibly unprofessional. One of the women saw my ad again after I met with her, so she made up a fake name and accent to talk to me again. So bizarre!

I ended up finding a nanny share, but it took a lot of looking.

I expect any adult hired to work with children to be loving and attentive. However, as another now-nanny who worked in Bright Horizons daycare centers, I know that is not the case. In fact, some daycare workers, while all smiles and sunshine when the parents are around, are downright cruel when the parents aren't around. This is why daycare centers don't have "Nanny Cameras" for the parents to peek in during the day.

OP, you know the right thing here. Get a nanny or stay home.

The PP is exactly right. It is not reasonable to expect to attract someone loving and attentive for $10 an hour. Because at that rate, if the caregiver is educated and great and knows what she is doing, then she can make more elsewhere. Which means the pool of people in a typical daycare STARTS with folks who are either NOT educated, NOT great caregivers or who do NOT know what they are doing. Your best case scenario is that they are kind and loving but didn't have the chance to get any formal education but they have reasonable common sense. Then you take that person who is relying on her good attitude and reasonable common sense to do the job well, and put her into the lifestyle she can afford at $10 an hour--she is constantly overworks and overstressed. How long until she is less responsive to her multiple or in some cases many charges? How long until she starts making stupid mistakes and/or cutting corners because she is just so tired?

Worked in daycare for a few years, after what I saw, I would never put my children on one. Nanny all the way.

Hello! I am also a former nanny and current preschool teacher. However, I truly enjoy what I do and totally understand how the ratios are not helpful to us as teachers/caretakers. I genuinely enjoy caring for children and am starting my home center. If you are interested in someone with experience and that enjoys teaching children feel free to contact me at 571-234-9033 or email at chavarria.vc@gmail.com

I think a nanny share would be your best bet if you can find a nanny and family that has similar needs.

I worked in both daycare and nanny situations. I could never put my child in a daycare and if I leave him/her with a nanny I will have nanny cams and let the nanny know about them. Daycares have a horrible teacher to student ratio. I toured a bright horizon for a prospective job and was horrified. You can not take care of 6-8 toddlers by yourself properly, just not possible. As for home daycares, a lot of shadiness goes on just about every day so not about that. My wish would be to have dependable family help or alternating schedules with my future husband so that we wouldn't need childcare.

That's why a lot of women end up staying home. Plus, most of your salary goes to child care so it often does not make sense to work. Your best option may be a day care that you work at that will give you free or discounted child care.

If you worked as a nanny and worked in a daycare then you know the only right decision is a good nanny. Or stay home for another two years, OP, if you can't afford a good nanny.

Of course, if you can afford it, you need to get a nanny. As someone who has worked in daycare as well, I KNOW I would never, ever do that to my child unless I absolutely had no other choice.

Can I just say it's so hard to find someone or find a daycare that meets your standards when you were a nanny or have worked in a daycare! I'm a FTM my son is 10 months, I'm slowly on the job search and I ended up sending out my resume I wasn't thinking I was going to get any replies due to the gap in my employment. But I had an interview Tuesday and it went really well. It just got me thinking where am I going to put him in daycare or do I get a nanny/nanny share. My last jobs were teaching in a special needs school, daycare teacher/floater and was a nanny. It's so hard for me to look a daycares after working in one. You have the people who are there for a paycheck and others who actually want to be there. And also you see and hear those stories about the teachers abusing the children.

Ugh. I just needed to vent.
