I'm currently on my second week with a new nanny family. When interviewing, MB briefly told me that her last nanny was Spanish speaking and she taught her DD so much! She said that by the time she left, her DD could understand a lot of Spanish. And she'd love her kid to keep learning and practicing, and that I could show her a Spanish cartoon every so often. I said okay, sure. My charge won't sit still for an entire cartoon, but she'll watch for a minute or two then get up and play. I still show it to her when there's a lull in our activities. MB just texted me saying that she hasn't noticed her child speaking Spanish anymore and asked me have I found a good Spanish cartoon for her and have I been practicing with her? Um. Hold on, what? I said yes, I had let her watch a few cartoons but it wasn't a priority in our routine. She seemed annoyed. Apparently this is a priority for her, because this is the very first thing she's ever talked to me about. (I only see DB when I get to work and leave. MB is still at work when I arrive and leave.) Guys, here's the catch, I DON'T SPEAK SPANISH. Not a lick. MB knows this, or at least she should, because I spoke nothing but English during my interview, I'm pale with blonde hair, don't have any sort of accent, etc. I'm also not getting paid to teach your kid Spanish. The pay isn't awesome as it is. Also, did I mention I don't speak Spanish at all? If her kid learning Spanish was a priority for her, she should've hired a Spanish speaking nanny. I'm trying to come up with a response to her being annoyed that I haven't been improving her child's Spanish skills. I'm honestly this-close to quitting because of other issues we've had in my very short time with them.
