OP here. Of course I do. But she already requires me to take the kiddos on an outing EVERY day, I do all kid laundry & grocery shopping, meal prep and cooking. AND I also take care of a second charge, an infant, on top of that. I feel she's asking too much. It is not my job to teach her daughter Spanish, especially with all the other duties I have.

Unless she is paying you $50/hr, you were crazy to take this gig.

OP,
Ignore the haters on here.
They are just trying to stir the pot.

If your MomBoss really feels that her daughter learning espanol is such an important goal, then she should have stressed this more during your interview & hired someone who is fluent in the language as well.

Also since you're being overworked + not paid well then it would be best to give them your walking papers and find a new position.

Good luck!

Agreed. People are just trying to stir the pot here. It's disturbing that they are in charge of kids.
Agree with above post.

Okay, Nanny, now work on your English and reasoning skills.

Yes, it seems bizarre. She should have hired a Spanish speaking nanny - which is certainly not hard to do. Start looking for another job, OP. That woman sounds nuts.

And it is also weird that she wants you to let her daughter watch cartoons while you are there.

Most parents don't want their child in front of the T.V. set if the Nanny is on duty.

Are you sure she knows that you don't speak Spanish? I agree that this all seems weird, especially since watching cartoons won't teach her anything. All the research shows that TV in foreign languages without it being reinforced with conversational language teaches nothing.

There's no reason why you can't do a few things here and there, but it's a bit absurd for her to be upset with you about it.

So if the former nanny speak and teach Chinese to the kid we the new nanny should borrow books from the Library so that we can continue teaching Chinese to their kids?

OP, tell your MB to enroll her daughter in Spanish lesson.

This is not the job for you. All those things are totally reasonable (though I'd get the groceries delivered). My kids leave the house every single day, even if it's raining. It shouldn't be a big deal for you to count the steps you're walking up or down, in Spanish. Or taking out books in Spanish at the library in addition to the ones in English.

Post 05/23/2017 17:24     Subject: She wants me to teach my charge Spanish..

I'm currently on my second week with a new nanny family. When interviewing, MB briefly told me that her last nanny was Spanish speaking and she taught her DD so much! She said that by the time she left, her DD could understand a lot of Spanish. And she'd love her kid to keep learning and practicing, and that I could show her a Spanish cartoon every so often. I said okay, sure. My charge won't sit still for an entire cartoon, but she'll watch for a minute or two then get up and play. I still show it to her when there's a lull in our activities.

MB just texted me saying that she hasn't noticed her child speaking Spanish anymore and asked me have I found a good Spanish cartoon for her and have I been practicing with her? Um. Hold on, what? I said yes, I had let her watch a few cartoons but it wasn't a priority in our routine. She seemed annoyed. Apparently this is a priority for her, because this is the very first thing she's ever talked to me about. (I only see DB when I get to work and leave. MB is still at work when I arrive and leave.) Guys, here's the catch, I DON'T SPEAK SPANISH. Not a lick. MB knows this, or at least she should, because I spoke nothing but English during my interview, I'm pale with blonde hair, don't have any sort of accent, etc. I'm also not getting paid to teach your kid Spanish. The pay isn't awesome as it is. Also, did I mention I don't speak Spanish at all? If her kid learning Spanish was a priority for her, she should've hired a Spanish speaking nanny. I'm trying to come up with a response to her being annoyed that I haven't been improving her child's Spanish skills. I'm honestly this-close to quitting because of other issues we've had in my very short time with them.
