Going away with employers is tricky. You, the nanny, are not on vacation. I have found that more is expected of me and for much, much longer hours but often downtime during those hours. Never assume you are included in any family outing, meal or plan. Generally, for me, it sucks. I like being home and knowing that I start my job at XAM and leave at XPM.
What kind of people have you worked for? We travel with out AP and on a week long vacation, she ends up working two evenings and 4 mornings (while we work out). Ends up being no more than 18hrs for the week and the evening sitting involves watching a movie with the kids and putting them to bed. The point of vacation is to hang out as a family.
PP here and I am a nanny - not an au pair. I have gone away with two different employers, both with one baby/toddler, and I have ended up pretty much being "on call" around the clock. Both very nice people and both mothers still nursing so they were around all the time but came and went whenever they chose without a schedule. I just don't care for going away with my charges and their parents - I like being home with my own family and having set hours in my job.
