It's an unlicensed in-home daycare, so don't waste your energy getting all offended that she's charging too little to be a real nanny. She's not a nanny. She watches kids in her home, without a license to do so. Out in Manassas, the going rate for in-home daycare would be about $40/day ($200/week). She's charging half that because she doesn't have a license, isn't inspected, and is probably out of compliance with a lot of things that matter to most parents. People in a bind use these kinds of childcare arrangements. It's not a good option, they know that, but it's better than locking the kid alone in the apartment while you go to work - which is what some families actually do when they can't afford childcare. Some of the posts I see on this board, about how unimaginable real life is for most of America make me wonder - who are you? What kind of upbringing you had, that you never knew anyone in such situations. The posters who keep bringing up ESL seem just crazy xenophobic. This is a forum for DC. It's diverse. Plenty of people here have English as a second language. Plenty of DC residents live off less than $15/hr. Do you intentionally make yourself so sheltered so that you can ignore that reality and only see the pretty, glamorous parts?
I've had a variety of life experiences but I still think this is not so "normal" for the underprivileged that it cannot be discussed here. You are saying if you have a 3 year old you have no other option than lock them up alone or use one of these places so we shouldn't be surprised? No, I don't think that is the case. You always have options. It's different if you have a 7 year old. Maybe locking up your 7 or 8 year old with a bowl of cereal is better than one of these places, maybe not. If you have a 3 year old or younger, you definitely cannot lock them up alone. CPS will be better for heavens sakes. Reach out to relatives. Go to a shelter. Depending on how this places looks to you upon inspection maybe it is ok or maybe not. I think your post is really judgmental.
