I've had a variety of life experiences but I still think this is not so "normal" for the underprivileged that it cannot be discussed here.

You are saying if you have a 3 year old you have no other option than lock them up alone or use one of these places so we shouldn't be surprised? No, I don't think that is the case. You always have options. It's different if you have a 7 year old. Maybe locking up your 7 or 8 year old with a bowl of cereal is better than one of these places, maybe not. If you have a 3 year old or younger, you definitely cannot lock them up alone. CPS will be better for heavens sakes. Reach out to relatives. Go to a shelter. Depending on how this places looks to you upon inspection maybe it is ok or maybe not.

I think your post is really judgmental.

Nope, I would bet it's either a scam or it isn't safe, and either way, I find it creepy. Less creepy than the people who want me to work for them for $20 a week, but still creepy.

This person... what is this person saying? All I got out of it is "It is creepy," and criticizing other people's English.

I'm from Manassas. That is a super sketchy area.

Thank you! You said every thing I was thinking in such a clear manner. Seriously, where do some of you people come from??

I don't see why this is a problem. That's the whole point of pooled childcare options vs. a private nanny.

According to her ad she sometimes charges $40 a day, so let's say she watches 3 children at $20/day and just one at $40/day.

That's $100 a day, for simple supervising kids playing like an aftercare program and she makes more than she could at McDonalds. Why get all offended? She isn't saying she will come to your house and be a nanny and create a learning curriculum and use her car to take your kid to museums in DC for $20/day. She is not competing with you.

We needed last minute childcare last week for my 2 y.o. and an in-home provider that our friends use had space. She charged $30 a day. The very low price totally freaked me out as we usually pay much more for our nanny but DS had a great time. She did projects with the kids, played outside, he slept, ate, was safe and clean.

She is licensed but was probably over the number of kids she is supposed to have, given it was the week between school and camp.

These are the people that drive down nanny/childcare wages for everyone. This person may be one extreme end of the spectrum ($1/hr??) but there are many "childcare providers" along this continuum willing to "watch" kids for minimum wage or less. I personally know a single mom (friend of my MB; we go over for play dates) who admitted to me that the SAHM who watches her 3 year old son while she's at work charges only $3/hr! (I hate to say that it wasn't terribly surprising that as soon as his mom mentioned that cheap sitters name, the little boy nearly cried, saying he didn't want to go to her house that day!)

Poor English, grammar, usage, definitely not a native speaker. Add in that the rates are outrageous, and this is just creepy.

She will work 24/7 so I believe that is the rate for 24 hours.
