[quote=Anonymous]I am a 30 year old professional nanny in one of the most affluent cities in America. I make 51 k a year, I know this is more than most of my friends make. I still feel highly ashamed by what I do. It is because of the mindset of everyone around us. People do not see this as a career. It is job in their mind. A job that teenagers can do. A job that requires no real "skill." It is hard not to feel ashamed when all your peers look down on you with pity. I am very good at what I do, I have a laundry list of references, I have extensive education on child development, yet I always feel the need to explain why I am still doing this at 30, and where it is I am "going" in life when asked what I do for a living. Things get worse for nannies in this regards the older we get. It is acceptable to be a nanny in this society while you are say 20-24 years old and in college and on your way to bigger and better things. It is awkward to be a nanny at 30 and find yourself working for a couple who is your same age or younger. Maybe there is something fundamentally wrong with our society, or maybe it is just something wrong with my own self-worth, but yes I am ashamed of being a nanny and it feels a bit comforting to know some other nannies feel the same.
