Don't pay any attention to two random women bashing nannies, OP. If they are bashing nannies, they likely trash talk other people, too. Catty people are catty.

No one should be ashamed of being a nanny and no one I know (parents or nannies) looks down on them for being nannies. In fact, all the parents I know IRL who employ nannies treasure them and are grateful to have excellent partners in the care of the their children.

I'm a nanny, love my job but I am ashamed of doing it for leaving.
However I'm not ashamed when I get my paycheck. I make less than op but still more than average American

+ 1 this I'm in my 30's and I make more and save way more then any of my friends. I'm proud to be a live in nanny but I do sometimes feel looked down on. I try to ignore those people though as I'm sure they are not nearly as well off as I am. When others judge so harshly it's probably because they are missing something in their own lives.

I am a nanny and when I started out I admit I used to be ashamed when I told people I worked as a nanny. I remember strangers even advising me not to use the term "nanny" to describe my profession...They advised me to use the term "au pair" because they said it sounded more professional and classier. As if!!

Now after almost 8 years in the business, I am a very proud nanny! I have cared for many children and have made quite an impact on their lives! That is more than many other people can say about their jobs/professions!! So when people ask what I do for a living, I always smile and proudly state that I am a nanny!

I am a 30 year old professional nanny in one of the most affluent cities in America. I make 51 k a year, I know this is more than most of my friends make. I still feel highly ashamed by what I do. It is because of the mindset of everyone around us. People do not see this as a career. It is job in their mind. A job that teenagers can do. A job that requires no real "skill." It is hard not to feel ashamed when all your peers look down on you with pity. I am very good at what I do, I have a laundry list of references, I have extensive education on child development, yet I always feel the need to explain why I am still doing this at 30, and where it is I am "going" in life when asked what I do for a living. Things get worse for nannies in this regards the older we get. It is acceptable to be a nanny in this society while you are say 20-24 years old and in college and on your way to bigger and better things. It is awkward to be a nanny at 30 and find yourself working for a couple who is your same age or younger. Maybe there is something fundamentally wrong with our society, or maybe it is just something wrong with my own self-worth, but yes I am ashamed of being a nanny and it feels a bit comforting to know some other nannies feel the same.

Its nothing to be ashamed of. However i feel like people dont treat a nanny position as a "job" OP, you make about $1200 a week, thats pretty good salary. Most of my friends dont make that much and they are way older than you are.

I'm not at all ashamed but I am bugged by people who assume I am the baby's mother or grandmother (I'm 50) just because I am white and speak with an American accent (you know - because I am American!).

I was a preschool teacher and elementary school teacher for 25 years before I became a nanny and I love being a nanny!

I feel ashamed when people from my own racial background act like I am settling because I nanny for a white family. I love my job but it is hard to convince my family I am not a servent like people of color were in the past.

I'm a nanny and proud of it. People ask me all the time if I am the baby's mother and I say proudly, "No, I'm his nanny!"

I live in a city that is full of well educated and professionally employed individuals. I do feel embarrassed occasionally when people ask what I do because like those moms they assume the same. I also get the pity looks. I tend to follow up my answer by stating I love working with children one on one and it allows me to fully utilize my degree. I am ashamed that I feel embarrassed of my profession.

Nanny here: there is absolutely no shame (IMO) about being a nanny. I'm proud of my job, my charges and my own accomplishments. Screw anyone who sees me as low income (40grand take home a year at 21 years old? Holla.)

I have an education that I am continuing and I LOVE that my job is to take care of awesome kids and play outside ALL day.

I've met two moms at a park talking about nannies in a really mean way. They didn't know I understood what they were saying since my native language is not so "popular". I'm a nanny as well... in my early 30s, married, one baby boy, master in business earned in my country, U.S.Citizen, 3 languages, making $60k

They seemed to think about us as a low income families, with no education, immigrants who cannot find a "normal" job...
