Hello. Just a quick question, but mostly a long vent. I am feeling super left out in the nanny world these days. I'm a NYC nanny who has to deal with so many other nannies and babysitters on a weekly basis. The feeling that I'm left out stems from that I am in situations where other nannies put me down. I don't think they meant to hurt my feelings. Last week I went to a playdate where there were 3 other nannies. I had met 2 of them before. All 3 nannies speak Spanish as their first language. I don't speak Spanish. But the 3 nannies decided to converse with each other in Spanish the whole playdate. Half way through the playdate, the 3rd nanny I hadn't met yells to me, "I thaught you were his Mom, not his nanny. You come dressed all fancy, wearing a fancy watch. They tell me that you don't have to do Houskeeping. You must be paid really well! You are too fancy to be a nanny!". The other two nannies laughed in agreement, then continued their conversation in Spanish. Last night I was at my charges cousins house. And there was his nanny, and another friend and her nanny. I have to be around these two nannies very frequently. And they mostly speak to each other in Spanish when we get together. Same thing happens at school pick-up waiting in the lobby of the school. All the nannies are in little clusters seemingly devided by "home country" chatting away in their native toungue. At the playground I take my charge to meet up with a friend who has a very sweet Philipino nanny. But she is very popular and all her fellow Philipino nanny friends join in the playdate. And of course start speaking in their foreign language, leaving me out. I love different cultures, and I wouldn't consider myself xenophobic in the least. But I feel it is rude not to include me in their conversations by speaking a language they know I don't understand. I do speak French fluently, but I haven't met another nanny in my charges circle that does. These nannies definitely seem to treat me differently than the other nannies. I haven't come across too many other non-American born nannies. I am an outsider. Would it be rude to ask them to speak in English when I'm around?
