I don't want this to be a long post, so I will try to keep it on point. I am a nanny. I work mon-fri 65 hours a week. I also babysit every other Saturday for a different family. I've been sitting for them for 4 years. They have 2 girls ages 4 and 6. I sat yesterday Saturday for this regular family. I arrived and the parents told me that the girls neighborhood friends were in the back yard playing. We are talking 6 boys and 1 girl plus my 2. The neighborhood backyards do not have fences so the kids play throughout all 4 of the yards. It was easy enough to keep an eye on mine and also help the other parents out on their decks watch the hoodlums when they came to my bosses yard. We all had a blast. Around 6:30pm the kids started getting called in for supper. My 2 came home along with another little girl who had been playing with them since before I arrived. Right away I knew something wasn't right. I asked her what her name was, and how old she was. She is 3. I asked if her brother just left to go home and she said her brother left a long time ago, (honestly I was just under the assumption one of the 6 boys were her older brother). I asked where she lived so we could walk her home and she told us it was far away. Well I have red flags flying everywhere and we trek to the front of the house. Immediately I see people running around about 2 blocks up calling the little girls name. That confirmed my suspicions and we hastily walked to where the group was. I was Immediately met with insults, threats, and yelling. The mother screamed they JUST realized 10 minutes prior to our arrival that the girl was not at their tail gate party.... I explained that I was the babysitter, and when I arrived at 4:30pm the little girl was already there playing in all of the neighbors backyards with seven other children. Screaming at me she said they were calling the cops and they were pressing charges against me for child endangerment. Sigh. Ok, call them I said. In the mean time I'm taking my two home two blocks over for dinner. 20 minutes later there are police at the door. They were nice and Asked what happened. I told them everything and explained all the neighbor kids hang out in the four backyards. I let them know she was back there when I arrived. I assumed she was with one of the boys. Turns out her brother was there, around 4pm. He left and didn't take her back with him. Mom mad dad saw him return to the tailgating party and assumed she did too....so from 4:30ish to 6:30ish these parents never once saw their little girl. The officers thanked me for my time, and said they were sorry for any inconvenience. I'm not mad at the parents for taking their fear and anger out on me. I do think they need to be more watchful. My bosses got home and I told them what happened. They were floored. They said they had seen her outside themselves. She comes over to the yards with her brother and sometimes alone to play. It just irks me that they had no idea their beautiful, charming, 3 year old baby was not with them for almost 2 hours, and she was 2 blocks away. It boggles my mind. I'm feeling guilty for not see red flags sooner. I honestly thought this other blonde haired kid was her brother, and I have no idea where any of those kids homes were. I guess I don't have a question. I suppose it is a rant. I just feel sick at how worried that mother and father had to have been. I've been there before with my niece. You feel like your gut was ripped out.
