I'll start by saying I almost always begin with young infants and stay through toddler years, and my indispensable item is a backpack to carry the child in. As soon as they can sit upright unsupported they're big enough for the backpack and I can't tell you how excited every child I've ever worked with got whenever I pulled it out for a walk. I love having my hands free and not having to navigate curbs and potholes, while the child loves the change of scenery (it's like a piggyback ride and they can see passing adults at their level rather than from below) and the proximity to you (right behind your head) so it's easier to talk to them as you're traveling. I request one at every job and love it almost as much as the kids do. Plus, hauling those 20-30lb+ kids around helps keep me fit. I think I've used a stroller twice in the last year; we take the backpack everywhere... it was even DC's first word!
