I just sat down with MB today asking her to purchase some king of play mat/rug/etc for my 7 month old charge to play on and learn to crawl on. They have all hardwood floors and no safe surfaces... Definitely a good playmat is a must.. I love the Skip Hop foam maps....

Pp backpack/sling when younger is a must!! It makes it so much easier I even use it in the house when making lunch/ vacuuming. Also a very lightweight stroller, and swaddling blankets (which they usually always have)

I like you generally start with infants and stay with a family through toddlerhood. One thing I generally request is my own diaper bag. I like having it stocked up with my own essentials (hand sanitizer, wipes, extra clothes, a snack for nanny, my lip gloss, my water bottle, etc...
Another thing I love to have is the ErgoBaby. I wear baby on most of our walks! I do love the BOB as well for trips where we need to carry more gear (like to the beach).
Last big piece of gear I love is the baby Bjorn bouncer! Best bouncer out there!
Random little things: a paci case to keep a spare paci clean if baby uses them.
A&A swaddlers, amazing, enough said...
Once they hit toddlerhood, there are more food and snack related containers that make travel easier too..

Nannies, what have been the best toys, gear, or other supplies you've used on the job? Things you'd recommend to pregnant friends or even ask the parents to purchase for you/DCs when starting a new job?

I'll start by saying I almost always begin with young infants and stay through toddler years, and my indispensable item is a backpack to carry the child in. As soon as they can sit upright unsupported they're big enough for the backpack and I can't tell you how excited every child I've ever worked with got whenever I pulled it out for a walk. I love having my hands free and not having to navigate curbs and potholes, while the child loves the change of scenery (it's like a piggyback ride and they can see passing adults at their level rather than from below) and the proximity to you (right behind your head) so it's easier to talk to them as you're traveling. I request one at every job and love it almost as much as the kids do. Plus, hauling those 20-30lb+ kids around helps keep me fit. I think I've used a stroller twice in the last year; we take the backpack everywhere... it was even DC's first word!

What else do you recommend to parents, friends, or fellow nannies?
