I have been working as an in-home Nanny for the past fifteen years.
I have many families that I utilize as references (10+), an Associate Degree (not in Child Development) and I am CPR/First Aid certified (I am always current on these!)

I was arrested on a Domestic Violence charge 21 yrs. ago, spent a night in jail but was never charged for it and have maintained a perfect criminal record since.
I also have a perfect driving record.

Well my current family (18 mo./3YO) is paying me $18/Hr.
The area I live in (SoCal) has a typical starting rate of $22/Hr.

I want to find a new position but am afraid this arrest from two decades ago may negatively affect my chances.
I have been told that arrests do not show up on b/g checks > only convictions - sometimes misdemeanors but always felonies.
Plus one arrest 21 yrs. ago may not be a detriment.

I hate working for such a low wage yet am not sure if I could get a better wage w/this arrest in my past.
For the record, it has not shown up on previous b/g checks but I haven’t had one in about 12 yrs. and was recently told that it might show up w/newer b/g checks.

What should I do??
TIA.

As a parent, I wouldn’t be bothered with ONE arrest, especially if it was that long ago. Bonus since you haven’t been arrested since and you were never charged nor convicted of anything.
Have you done Trustline? In California many families rely on this. You might want to call them and see what you can find out.
Eighteen an hour for two at those ages is underwhelming.
Under or over the table doesn’t matter , even for a gross hourly wage it is very low. You should be starting at least at twenty three an hour for straight Nannie work excluding all household chores. Hope this helps

Can you do a background check on yourself to see what shows up? That seems like the easiest solution.

This is actually a very genius solution.

Trouble is that it might not be the same background check software as a potential employer’s.

True, so she should do the most in-depth one possible. If it doesn't show up there, she has nothing to worry about.

If you were arrested but let go without being charged with anything then it’s not gonna show on your record.

^^ This

I do not think prior arrests show up on most background checks because in a nutshell an arrest is simply an officer’s opinion that someone committed an offense.
What one officer may arrest someone for - another one may just issue a citation - and another may not do anything at all.

What constitutes criminal convictions on checks are typically any felony convictions - sometimes misdemeanors but no arrests.

If someone were in the military and had to undergo a background check for security clearance then yes an arrest, even one decades ago may show up but not the standard one for childcare.

I just asked my husband (detective) he said everything shows up in a background check. Your best bet would be to get it expunged off your record especially since you weren't charged.

Do a background check on yourself and see if it shows up. I would not care about this showing up on your background check. An incident from 21 years ago with no further ones isn't a red flag for me. Especially if your work history is solid.

An arrest that occurred over twenty yrs ago would not impact my decision to hire a nanny, as long as her record was clean since then.

Plus dv arrests are very subjective imo so that is a gray area to me.
