Hi everyone-

What is the going rate per hour (take home) for a nanny on Arlington? We are beginning a nanny share this summer for 3 young toddlers.

Thanks for your help!

unless you aren't paying taxes, you should never negotiate in terms of take home pay. You don't know what deductions the nanny is taking. Always talk in terms of gross pay.

Firstly, only negotiate in gross. You should speak with an accountant about this because it sounds like you would benefit from some professional guidance.

The rate? Well, what can you afford?

At least two of them are in the same family, yes? I would charge $35 an hour for three 15 month olds; that is an intense ratio and I would view it more as a teaching position than basic childcare (I have several years of experience as a public school teacher). Others will certainly do it for significantly less than that.

But I would recommend you do the job yourself for three days in a row before you decide what you are able and willing to pay; I expect you will want someone experienced and highly skilled once you see how difficult it can be.

$35? That is nuts. If one family has twins they are better off finding own nanny for $18-20/h

Op $30 if these are 3 different families. $25 if 2 families.

Agreed, it's a high rate. That's why I said I'm sure others will do it for less.

You can always find someone who'll do it for peanuts, but be careful.

My rule of thumb is $8-12/child/hour, depending on how much authority I have. If a parent wants to micromanage everything, they pay $12/hour; if I can set the nap schedule and take children to a new park without getting permission, they pay $8/hour. If this is three families, rather than one set of twins and another toddler, the rate goes up to $10-12/hour, because I would have to deal with three sets of parents.

$12 times three per hour?

Gross pay = $10 - $12 per hour per family if it is a 3 family share. That is an approximate discount of 30% off of my 1 child/1family rate.

A two family share? Still no less than $30/hour, and the parents would need to figure out the split of costs.

Of course, OT would apply.

So for a 50 hour week, all 3 families would pay at least $575/week GROSS. I would gross $1775/week.

^^^^to add, each family would be paying me $15/hour if they hired me individually.

One family = $862.50 solo care vs. $575 shared care per week.

If the families bicker and it affects my work, absolutely. If the families felt that they could treat me like a doormat or a teenage babysitter, absolutely. Each family would still be paying less than if they hired a nanny solely to work with their family, and I'm willing to put up with parental shenanigans (to a point) if I'm paid well.

Going with the typical 50 hour work week in a three child, three family share $10-12/hour/family:

40*10+1.5*10*10=$550
40*12+1.5*10*12=$660

I don't think tacking on $100 per family each week extra is exorbitant if the families cause issues with my working environment and/or control the manner that I do my work.

Nanny gross for the 50 hours would be $1650-1980, completely understandable for a three family share.

This nanny is smart. Good for her!

Yes she is smart and we need more nannies like these around.

Except nanny care for three toddlers honestly make no sense. At this ratio you are almost in daycare territory, and a well run home daycare center will be cheaper and more stable than a nanny who has to juggle three families.

That's 92k a year salary. Why would 3 families each pay $10 per child to be in a 3 kid share? They can get it in a 2 kid share. If 2 families are involved, again why would anyone with 2 kids deal with a 3 kid share? They can find a nanny that caters just to them at $20/hr.
