Care.com background check-is it reliable? RSS feed

Hello, we are hiring a nanny off care.com to care for our baby. I'm nervous about leaving our baby with someone off the Internet. Is the care.com background check reliable and fail safe? Do they have a way to ensure nannies can not submit a fake SSN?

Or it is better to do our own background check?

I've never had anyone run a background check on me and have only had the care.com run on me twice. I have no idea how reliable it is since I've never had anything that would show up in the first place. I believe they do verify the SSN and name matchup but it's been so long that I don't remember the process in detail. I do know there's a 2-3 lag from I signed up until I could use the account. I assume they were verifying things during that time.

Background checks as a whole aren't so great. They will show if someone is convicted of a felony but that's about it so the care one is as good as any. If you really want to do a good one, spend the money on a non-internet based background checking firm.

I am not really sure.

I have a friend who recently paid fifty dollars to run a background check with a company online and it turned out to give some wrong and dubious information.

I know this first-hand because she typed in my #SSN and information and while 1/3 of the information came back correct, a lot of it was just off base. Basically they got my previous addresses correct, as well as the names of my relatives and extended family members. However, it showed I received traffic tickets in many cities I never have visited as well as arrests and misdemeanors convictions along with marriage records that were allegedly performed before I was even born!

So my best advice for you is if you run a background check on another individual, find a reputable source in your State.

Perhaps a visit to your local Police station??

It isn't. No cheap background "check" is going to reveal important info. You can either find a brick and mortar PI or an on-line service to do an actual, thorough, complete check. That will cost a good bit more, but it's completely worth it, don't you think?

Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree with this.

I recently spent some money online checking out a nanny and she came up with some questionable things which when I asked her about them, she flat out denied them.

She seemed very honest about it and was also very upset that this stuff was online, so I opted to do a background check on myself as well and sure enough, there were some things online that could not have been me. My social security number matched the name, age and previous address locations to a "T," however it listed traffic infractions in cities listed I have never visited or heard of plus court and marriage records that have nothing to do with me.

I am furious that these online companies can steal our money by claiming to provide us with legit information on a person by submitting their social security number, then when we do so, they in return give us half ass information.

I say the only one hundred percent honest background check would be to go into your local police precinct with the potential nanny and ask to see any criminal records, if none exist, ask to see a sex offender record and do a fingerprint check.

Yes- you need to do a federal check, not just a state check.

This is absolutely true.

Do not pay these internet robbers a red cent for their services. They tempt you with just a tad of information on a person, then lure you with "For just $19.95...or whatever more, you can get this person's criminal history, marriage records, court records, arrest records, etc...!!" then once you pay the amount, all you get in return is bogus information. And good luck getting a refund on your monies. You probably have a better chance getting hit by lightening on purpose.

I would get the background check done through your police dept. locally.
