Nanny Share Rates? Am I lowballing? RSS feed

Quit your job and stay home with the baby, OP. You won't even find a licensed day care for that.

$400 a week for 50 hours?! For two children?! AND the job ends in June?! LOL
Anonymous
Yeah. Sorry OP but that's not happening.

My share rates start at $10 an hour per family. Time and a half for anything over 40 hours. And I would never take a job that didn't pay during the summer.

You could probably find someone at $18 an hour if you paid OT and paid during the summer.

No way. I'd say you need to offer AT LEAST $15/hour for two kids, AND you're going to lose the nanny at the start of the summer AND you're not going to get an experienced nanny. You might find someone who isn't a nanny long-term--someone who wants to go to college in the fall or something--maybe.

Here are the expectations:
-Care for two children under 1 yr. old (Full-time, 50 hrs/week, paid Fed holidays off, summers off unpaid)
-Light child-related housekeeping

Pay: Total of $400/week -$1600/month- ($200/weekly per family)

Do we stand any chance of finding a great nanny at this level of pay?

You will never find anyone decent for less than minimum wage. If slightly less than $200/week is your max budget, I am not sure what to tell you. In my area, you could find a good family style daycare for that, but you would not find a decent daycare facility and you cannot afford an Au Pair.

Perhaps your best bet is to seek out a SAHM who is interested in doing childcare for grocery money, and trim the hours substantially. You could also try to bargain trading weekend care for the SAHM for some of the cost of your needs.

Rock bottom cost for a nanny share with a nanny who might stay with you and not leave ASAP for better pay and less hassle is $16/hour ($8/hour per family) plus overtime. Since you will be letting nanny go every summer, you will likely need to find a new nanny each fall.

Your lowest cost possible would be $8/hour for 50 hours per week, 10 hours of OT = $440/week PER FAMILY, plus all employer taxes and expenses will add about 10% to that cost. And there is no chance of much "light housekeeping" other than basic child items being dealt with. No laundry, no vacuuming, nothing but bottles and dishes.

In all sincerity, if you can only afford to pay $10,000 or less for childcare, you might want to see if you can afford to SAH. Or you could try to find a job share for yourself and another new mom, and take turns working in the office and working at home caring for both babies.

What you are offering is not lowballing - it is ILLEGAL.

Seriously, what are you thinking?

I would not expect "light housekeeping" for this rate. If the babies are still breathing when parents return, consider that a "win." That's about the level of care you can expect from the rate you are offering.

I have never read a two page thread on DCUM where everyone is in agreement! What you are proposing is illegal -- not to mention immoral. Did you honestly think you could get care for your child for pennies?

PS I also marvel at how you want "light housekeeping" but made no reference to the nanny being certified in CPR or had any experience with infants! You sound like horrible people and are going to be bad, bad parents.

+1 I can't begin to imagine what you and your husband are like as people let alone future parents.

You stand NO chance of getting the "great" nanny you're looking for. This is insulting. A licensed daycare should be #1 on your list. Also, you cannot get out of paying them in the summer. You'll definitely lose your spot with that behavior.

You cannot possibly be serious with this, OP. Hiring anyone for less than minimum wage is illegal!!!

Stay home with your new baby. You cannot afford any kind of decent childcare.
