Which agencies do background checks and reference checking on the parents? Seems those are the agencies who will attract the best, and the most careful nannies.

,Running an agency is a business, employers are the customers and nannies are the products sold. It is all about pleasing the customer and making a sale. I do not think any agency is going to lose a customer by asking for a background check on them.
One agency said that nannies are a dime a dozen so they are not going to spend time on ways to attract them. One reason you will find great nannies on-line, they are fed up with being sold to the the highest employer that will pay 5k and up for them.

5K? How do they justify that? Hiring a service to do some background checks?

5k is actually low, most fee's is between 10-20% of the yearly income. Many that go to on-line ask the same question.

Yeah, but we know that the online services care nothing of security. NBC news caught sitters on care.com and sittercity with clear criminal histories, when in fact there were criminal convictions. Why would you trust any of them to do background checks?

None of them do that.

However, the best agencies don't work with every nanny OR family that applies, and as an in-demand nanny I trust them to do proper vetting of the families they send me to interview with. This might mean they ask to speak to former employees or it might just mean conducting multiple in-person meetings with them to ensure everyone is on the same page. I do not require a background check on people I work for, but I do require them to come through a trusted agency or via personal referral.

In 20+ years in the industry I don't know one that background screens the parents. Many will require a face to face with the parents at least once, and some will visit the work place (home) prior to referring candidates - especially for live in positions - to have 1st hand information, but there is no hard and fast rule.

An applicant should ask the agency what their specific policy is. And of course applicants should always keep their safety in mind, and when interviewing make sure someone else knows where they will be when, and then check back with the friend/family member when they leave the interview. This is particularly important if the applicant is using an online referral resource, but should apply across the board.

Funny how parents and agencies think they should know every tiny detail about the nanny's personal life, including what color her panties are. And the nanny know nothing about the house she's going into, or who's coming and going. Nothing about the family. Seems silly not to get three (at least) references for each parent.

If good nannies were a dime a dozen, why are the most elite DC agencies looking for nannies on care.com??

The crazy nanny poster is back. She posted again and again and again...and again on another thread. She needs to just give it up. No parent is going to offer a job let alone give her references.

It's an embarrassing question...

Everyone does everything imaginable to land a good nanny. Contrary to one or two posters on this forum, good nannies are very hard to find. Those who have one, already know this.
