Do not litigate "how sick is too sick" with your employee.

You should have a contract that spells out a number of sick days per year (generally 5-10). It's HER decision when she needs to take a sick day. If she says she's too sick to come in, that's the answer.

If she hits the limit in her contract, you deal with it then.

If you don't have a contract, write one!
We were in a nanny share once where both the other parents had to work on Veteran's Day and Columbus Day. So, we offered the nanny Christmas Eve and the day after Thanksgiving as paid holidays instead, and she was fine with it.

She also got three weeks paid vacation and two weeks of sick leave a year. She was very happy with the contract.
I work for doctors, I work several federal holidays.
If she is fighting the flu you can be down for over a week. You’re definitely being unreasonable. The virus is going around like crazy now. Nannie’s are human too. If she has PTO/Sick days have her use it . It is your responsibility to have back up
Yes you are unreasonable. It can take 7-10 days to feel better. You were selfish to have her come when kids were sick. You should give her another day or two off and give her a bonus as she lost her weekend being sick because of you.

Your response is dumb. OP is clearly a jerk and so are you. The issue with some parents is they will make a nanny work through colds, stomach bugs that their kids passed onto them but can’t understand that a nanny needs to heal and rest as well. Apparently we are not human. A flu doesn’t just disappear in three days let her rest up so she can return to work and give 100 percent of herself.

You’re confused. Why would anyone work, when you owe them the same money to observe a federal holiday?

This includes time for laundry, straightening the kids rooms, date nights and lots of driving. I have never had an issue. If you choose someone who really wants the challenge of working with kids I find they do not resent the hours especially if you are are good host mom to them.

Why does a SAHM need an au pair? Wow...

Hmmm. I don't know. Why do you need to be a snarky bitch? You do not know anything about my life or my family but I feel sorry for you that you are so judgmental and unhappy with you own life.

Ok...help me understand why a SAHM with only two school aged children needs an au pair? Are you sick? Dying? Rich?

Rich people don’t hire au pairs. Full time live in nannies and housekeepers. Not minimum wage workers.
My children gave my nanny a cold I let her go home early on Friday because she was clearly under the weather. She had a three day weekend to rest because of the holiday. In my opinion she can work today Tuesday but I’m getting push back from her. She’s saying she’s still fighting the flu and I’m being unreasonable. Thoughts?
Nope, you pay her for the holiday and you pay her regular rate if she agrees to come
OP here - yes, I agree. Our nanny also has all federal holidays off and paid. I was just curious in the event Nannies do work those days how people arranged (I figured time and a half pay and pre-agreed)
Of course nanny does not come on federal holidays, that is why they are holidays, she gets paid and does not work on those days
My work only gives me some of the federal holidays. So that is what my nanny has. But it was all written out in our job offer and nanny agreement.

Yes, people like that should be arrested.

There should really be an 800 number to report this kind of abuse.
