I don’t think the reason that parents do not want their kids watching screens when the kids are in the care of their Nannie’s is due to any damage that excessive TV watching can cause to the child.

The reason is that parents who are paying a person to care for their kids want that person to be actively engaged with their kids the entire time that they are “on the clock” for lack of a better term.
If the nanny is passively sitting on the sofa watching TV even for only twenty minutes, than that is twenty minutes that she could be emptying the dishwasher, wiping off the counters or sweeping the kitchen floor.

Parents do not want to pay someone for simply watching television while they are supposed to be working.
Remember this is your vacation not hers. You may have her working far more and if she's in the house she's still a responsible adult. You absolutely pay her more as she's away from home and its not a vacation for her, its work. And, let her know its ok to say no (I did that once and it was miserable - working 10-12 hours a day as even if parents were there they were relaxing and not caring for the kids, they also didn't clean up so I was the housekeeper too).
When I travel with families I’m automatically paid at least what I normally earn, even with fewer hours. Plus I was given extra cash for my meals out on my own, as I don’t have access to my kitchen.

Private room is a basic. I understand how this arrangement seems like a fun thing for the nanny, but many of her nanny friends usually get fully paid time off when the families travel. My employer always wanted me to have a very nice time so I’d be agreeable to travel with them again.
We also paid our nanny a $75 a night convenience fee
I want to know how others structure pay and time off when their nanny travels with them. We are going to the beach for a week this summer (domestic) and have rented a large house, nanny would have her own room. We are debating asking nanny to care for the kids either 4 hours/day with one or two days being 8 hours, split between AM and PM so the parents can go out. The rest of the time would be hers and she would have access to a car.

Nanny typically works 8-9 hour days and we would want to keep paying her what she typically earns, so she would be paid for 8 hours when only working 4. Do we need to pay a stipend or overnight rate too? We wouldn’t need her to care for the kids overnight and she would be welcome to eat with us, if she wanted, but I know some employees would rather peace out during their off hours.

Yes, you can get a new job. They probably can’t afford good childcare any more.
We are exploring options for the upcoming school year and considering an Au-Pair. My preference would be for the Au-Pair to have been raised with a sibling who has some kind of medical condition or special needs. Bonus if they studied it, but lived experience would be our preference. Please share any helpful considerations when moving forward.

What did you find surprising about the Aupair's adjustment in the first few months?

What would you have asked during the interview process that could've changed things for the better?

+1 This is exactly what PTO is for. If she has used it all up, I would let her use a week in advance. That way, she doesn't lose a paycheck and you will be able to cover the backup nanny.

However no one would expect you to pay her an entire workweek along w/paying for a backup Nanny as well.

I think what is most important for your Nanny is for you to keep her job open for her so when she is able to return - that she still has her job to come home to.

Hi OP here, she is actually really good we have no complaints. This would be her first time requesting any significant time off other than us actually giving her time off. I have a hard time processing things like that (paying when you're not at work etc). She's been with us for almost a year and though she didn't ask to still be paid I don't know how to handle Friday (pay day) when I only pay for this week. I think when parents ask questions much like mine it's immediately assumed she's a horrible nanny, she's not in all honesty. She will obviously still have her job I just can't wrap my head around paying for a week of abscense in this economy.

If she’s a solid person with good ethics, she’ll somehow make it up to you. I would. Good nannies are hard to find.
OP, you're being incredibly thoughtful.

Some nannies on here have said that they receive a week for ever year. That has never been my experience, but YMMV.

In my eyes: you've been discussing it with her for more than a year. While it's admirable you're concerned for her finding another job, it's ultimately up to her. She's an adult and it's her responsibility to find a job that works with her schedule. Good luck!

Yeah, you wouldn't have lasted a day in our house, and your comment reminds me why I avoid DCUM.

I appreciate the nice comments here. This will not be a surprise to our nanny, and I want to make sure that we are not shortchanging her, so was hoping to get some sort of a benchmark. E.g., severance at my office is one week per every two years of service. Trying to get a sense of whether there is a norm. Or whether it's typical to keep on a nanny until she finds something else. Etc. We aren't going to leave her high and dry...
I’d give her at the very least a month. And of course a bonus. We gave our nanny of a year and half a week and a half’s pay as a bonus.
After all these years I'd organize something with her and her family : either a lunch or cake at your place, give her flowers, a note/picture from the kids and a bonus.

What they’re doing is legal and 10% is generous.
What were your hours when you started and what are they now? Them
Dropping hours doesn’t seem fair but you are also welcome to look for something with more hours.
