The right thing to do would be to let you take off based on your info.
But you haven’t said how much vacation you get? Sick leave? How much you’ve used already this year?
If you’ve used it all already offer to take it unpaid.
No one in their right mind would stay in employment where they were constantly paid after their scheduled and agreed upon payday.
Because rent, bills, ETC. all have deadlines to be paid by and then late fees accrue.
If your employers pay you late and arrive home late than they should pay late fees.

What a fine way to treat the person who cares for their kids!
You should just forgo even returning back to work at all, meaning find yourself a brand new family to work for as soon as possible. Let the family know that they can begin their new nanny search today.

However, MB often will say “if you get bored, can you deep clean all the sinks?” or “if you get bored, can you deep clean all the cabinets?” or “can you mop the whole house?” or “maybe you can reorganize all our hall closets soon”. I work with an agency which is how I found this family therefore we have a contract. None of these duties are on there. I was hired on as a nanny only (and am paid as a nanny only). Not a housekeeper or assistant. The baby naps 3-4 times a day which is when I get my other cleaning duties finished and when I’m done with everything, I read my book until she wakes up. Sometimes I will do these extra things to be nice but I do not put them on my to-do list. How can I nip this in the bud without being rude? They work with me a lot on planned vacation days, etc. + I have never called out or been late but I don’t want this to get worse.

Just reply "I never get bored because I'm busy." If you start doing non-child related housework it will quickly become expected

This all the way!
I am a nanny and I took a new position a month ago out of state. The family offer me 2 months of housing in their home the time to find an apartment. I came for a trial and found some apartment on my budget and now I couldn’t find nothing but I have one month left. However, all the apartments that I found are twice my budget and the ones I found are almost 2h driving which I can’t do for a start time at 7am. They offer me to be a live in which I’m not comfortable for my age and the area is far from the city. I won’t have no life and they also have some comments that I know it won’t work for me. Now I want to quit I know they will be upset and the agency as well.
Any suggestions please?
Id walk away from such cold and heartless clients. You exist too and they aren't acknowledging you at all.
Coming home late regularly is a good reason to quit this position stat. I would not work for a family that thinks this is acceptable to do.
I lost my only sibling, my beloved sister last Thur. to breast cancer.
For context we were never had much of a relationship with our parents and we were extremely close.

I work Mon. - Thur. weekly.
I am not only devastated (am finding it hard the past few days to eat, shower, get out of bed, etc.) but need to get some of my sister’s affairs taken care of.

I told my NF about all this on Thu. and requested next wk. off.
They told me that was too much time, that two days max was all they could swing.
They said I could take off M + T but not the rest.
I have been with this family now 2.5 yrs.

What would you do??
Hello,
My name is Ablavi. I have been taking care of babies for more than 20 years. I do everything from feeding, changing, napping, walks, reading (French & English), activities, and getting them ready for bed (depending on the time of the schedule ). I adore all children.
I take care of every child as if they were my own. I will provide a loving and safe environment. I HAVE EXPERIENCE CARING FOR NEWBORNS, TODDLERS, AND MORE THAN ONE CHILD. I have my CPR and First Aid certificate and am up to date with all vaccines. I am available to start beginning of September 2025.
Feel free to contact me at

Thank you!

If you really need this job due to finances then I would talk to your bosses and see if they change.

However I personally would be resentful already about being treated so unfairly thus far.
OP, even though the family pays you for the minutes that they are late (as they should!) you should charge them double the amount per minute.

That is what my daycare did when I used to work at the center.
We charged the parents $1 for every minute they were late.
It really nipped things in the bud really fast.

Many NFs unfortunately view their Nannies as simply the hired help and do not show them the respect that they truly deserve.
Which is just sad since this is the person who is caring for their loved ones.

A Nanny’s time is just as important as anyone else’s.
They should arrive home at the stated time.
Of course, emergencies occur but not 97% of the time.
Daycares and day camps charge late fees when a child is late getting picked up and so should you.
Otherwise what is the incentive to stop?
As well as receiving your paycheck.
Nannies like getting paid on a weekly basis and should be paid on their last work day of the week.
Paying a Nanny late is basically showing your Nanny she is wholly unappreciated.

OP gets paid for that additional time. I'd try to give the family the benefit of the doubt.
