How was it?

I agree, we all need to talk to the local DC government and tell them that we are sick of them messing with our lives and our APs lives and making everyone worse off. We need to hold the DC government accountable.

Huh? Do you know how many APs are working in clubs while you thought she’s just going to the movies?

No one went to the meeting?

Does anyone know how quickly the bill could pass? I want to extend our current au pair but don't want to get stuck with a bunch of agency fees if we have to bail out.

We had a summer arrival. We gave our AP until April to let us know if she’s re-upping (she doesn’t want a rematch but is very close to her family and isn’t sure she can do another year away from home). If she doesn’t re-up, we already put a deposit on a daycare seat for next year. We’re unwilling to take a risk of needing to scramble mid-year with a new AP.

Montgomery County, MD has an exclusion in their bill: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/OCP/domestic/index.html#3

Does anyone have any update on this? Brandon Todd is my councilmember and our neighborhood is stacked with au pairs.

Nothing is going to happen for while. If you want update, register on the bill website to get an update. The link is posted somewhere on this thread.

My guess is that, because the world and economy will be turned upside down, they won't be getting to this anytime soon. Which is a shame for the domestic workers who could have really benefited from this bill.

I think the biggest threat to the Au Pair program for the moment is the 60 day moratorium on au pairs coming. I wonder if the programs have enough financial cushion to keep up their staff? We have a nanny and were planning to transition to AP in August, I'm definitely worried about programs folding and also AP's just making other plans given the instability. I hope I'm totally off?

You can say the same thing of any business right now! The true is no one knows what is going to happen with COVIS-19 or the Au pair program or many other businesses that were disrupted by this pandemic. If/once we go through this they will always be some APs who want to come to U.S. and some families who want AP. But I am not sure how popular the program will stay if stricter domestic laws are passed everywhere.

Does anyone know what happened with this legislation and how it affects au pairs in DC?

Just like the lawsuit/visa issues/minimal wage issue in MA...nothing. Nothing came of them here. I wish they would stop the fire drills every few months.

They had hearings on new domestic worker legislation on Friday where former au pairs testified. I know that Blinken/Rice had some proposed rulemaking that would preempt state laws for au pairs. Anyone have more information?
