Hire the nanny now, and keep her working while you're on leave. I just had a baby and I had a 3 YO, and it was really hard to bond and snuggle with the new baby (not to mention recover) while I was trying to keep up with the 3 YO. So keep the nanny on to work with the 3YO while you are on leave.

Sorry all the DCUM crazy nannies have you running for the hills. Try to remember that DCUM is hardly representative of real life.

To answer your actual question, I would want to know more about your current childcare status. Are you staying home with your existing child right now, or has your child been in group care? Will some form of group care continue during maternity leave? I ask because having a night nanny helps, but if you plan to breastfeed, you will still be up with baby throughout the night anyway. If your plan is to care for a newborn and a toddler during the day with only 30 hours a week of overnight care, I think you might regret it!

If you are SAH, my suggestion would be to hire a daytime nanny now and plan to do something like one night per week of overnight newborn care as well. That gives you a chance to catch up every so often, but more importantly, you can sleep when baby sleeps at night and during the day, since the nanny can care for your toddler and take the baby for some parts of the day as well. The other benefit here is that it gives your older child time to bond with the nanny and that will help with every part of this. If you hire a temp nanny then your DC loses his nanny at the same time the baby is born.
