Hear it straight from the source:
"The current average hourly rate for nannies in DC is $18-$22 per hour for a live-out nanny. We encourage you to choose a rate that falls in this range and is based on your experience and the requirements of the position. If you are seeking a live-in position, factor in the room and board that will be provided when determining your salary range."

So enough on the $35 jobs.

So if a nanny is used to earning $25/hr, and she considers using the White House Agency, they'll "encourage" her to drop her rates?? What a real deal for the creme de la creme nannies! WTH? Who goes for that nonsense?

I make the same as you and I found my job through them. I never found them to be stuck up. In fact, they helped me work through a difficult situation during my transition from one family to another.

Don't they "encourage" their best nannies to stick to $22/hr at the most?

You probably work for them. Wink, wink.

I live in for the parents’ convenience and/or because it’s a requirement for the position. Per the IRS, room and board are mandatory under those circumstances, without docking my pay.

They told me the range that “most” nannies get but also said that the negotiation of salary and benefits were between the family and me. Why would they encourage you to stick to that range (especially the lower end) when they make their money off of commission based on your salary? I obviously can’t speak for others but I personally enjoyed working with them and found a job within a decent timeframe.

I can only imagine they "encourage" their "creme de la creme" nannies to stick to that range so they can convince their potential clients that their nannies are totally "affordable"!

The question we should all be asking is:
If the "salary negotiation is between the family and the nanny", why are they "encouraging" a price range in the first place?

What does everyone think about this?
Something smells fishy about how they operate.
Actually, they sound outright dishonest. Sorry.

I've been reading a lot about educated nannies. Are these nannies tutoring the children in addition to doing their regular duties. I remember helping and checking school work many years ago before the parents arrived home. But no way was I tutoring anyone's children on a nanny's salary.

Tutoring costs $60/hr.

Educated nannies lay the foundation for your child's future success in life. Establishing and maintaining a nurturing bond is essential early on. An expert caregiver must recognize and appropriately respond to your child's needs on so many levels. The more caregivers you have, the more difficult it is for any of them to really know your child.

As I understand it, that’s aimed at nannies who barely meet their requirements. Several positions advertise top salary (ie well over 70k per year).

A nanny from there said they advertise jobs on their site that don't exist - just to hook you into doing all the applications - for nothing.

If you are only going to pay $20 per hour then you had better also pay for the nanny's health insurance, sick time off, and 3 weeks paid vacation.

My sister (55) is a retired elementary school teacher (reading specialist and special ed certifications) now working as a nanny and gets $32 an hour (3 kids). Her employers' friends and neighbors are constantly trying to steal her away from her family with offers of more money.

It all comes down to: cheap immigrant babysitter or professional nanny?

We found our Unicorn, and she charges 15.00 an hour.

She is highly engaging, college educated, and even helps cook meals if time allows. She is college educated and speaks fluent English.
