I have been a nanny for about two years and recently got married.
My husband indicated that the family has been abusing my situation. My work hours are 8-6pm, however I frequently worked until 8pm or had to come in on Saturday or Sunday to work extra hours with no additional pay if I didn’t get to work all my 50 hours during the work week. I have a contract that says guarantee hours for 50 hours a week. My husband thinks I need an employment lawyer to get back all the hours and also be able to prevent the family from being able to prevent me from getting a new job. He thinks I need them to sign a paper to not retaliate against me. I need help. I am from the Middle East and my husband is American. I want to do something but still want to be able to get a new job with another family. How do I deal with this problem? Anyone else have dealt with this issue before? |
| Do you have a contract ? You should have set hours and if you have guaranteed hrs if they let you go for the day they don’t get to say come this day just to make up the hrs. It doesn’t work that way. Maybe if they ask you in advance. I’d look for a new job |

Calling it abuse is more than a bit extreme. Are they taking advantage of you? Yes, 100%. Is it abuse? Ehh...
Are you paid legally with taxes taken out? Are you paid overtime? How will you figure out how much backpay they owe you? Start looking for a new job now, so you can quit instead of being fired. |
| I don't get the situation. You are contracted to work 50 hours. 8-6 is 50 hours. Are you not coming in, coming in late? |
