Hiring a part-time sitter for just 10 hours a week? RSS feed

Anonymous
Next fall, our kids will be in school full-time. We'd like to hire a nanny or sitter from the hours of 3-5pm Monday through Friday to pick up the kids from school and then play with them for a bit. We do live near a college, and would be happy to employ a college student. Would anyone actually be interested in only working 2 hours a day though?

Will depend on what you are paying. Expect to pay a lot more than whatever you are currently thinking.

And if you hire a college student, expect that you will probably have to hire a different one when spring semester starts (early January.) Also, spring break for college usually isn't at the same time as it is for elementary schools--so the nanny probably won't be available that week.

Maybe someone who has another part time job and happens to need those hours. It’ll be harder to find. With the travel to/from your place it makes two hours hard to justify unless you pay well or they live in the neighborhood.

Everyone on here will probably tell you no but I think it can work only if you employ someone who lives in your immediate neighborhood.

A college student may work out - maybe a student whose classes get out around 3p (your start time.)

It might take longer to find someone for those hours, but it can be done.

Good luck.

(Mom here). I tried to do this with a high schooler and couldn't believe how many things came up - sports practice, doctor appointments, homecoming, etc etc. We stopped after a month!

I think a responsible college kid (or even a grad student maybe?) is your best bet. There are lots of parents who need these same hours, so it might be competitive out there. But I think you could find someone!

Hey OP! Are you in the Chevy Chase MD area? We will have a younger child starting nanny care around then but we won’t need the nanny after 2-3 pm. So we could team up? If not in that area - NVM! Thanks

Will be hard to find someone to do this consistently. I’m a SAHM and would only do this if you lived in my neighborhood but a lot of SAHMs seem to be offended if you ask so there’s that.

?

OP didn't say anything about looking to hire a SAHM. She is considering looking for a college student.

I would do it as a parent in the same school.

Most people want to work more than 2 hours a day. That’s a job for a teenager and most teens aren’t interested because they have sports, boyfriend etc etc. it’s very hard to find this. I suggested a SAHM because they would already be home and it could be a win win if the kids are the same age and sports practice begins after 5 pm.

+1 This. You can probably find someone, but that someone may quit on you when they get busy/find something better and you'll have to keep finding new someones.

Most SAHMs stay home to spend time with their kids and to have flexibility in the afternoons to do things like dentist appointments, after school activities (some start before 5) go to the park, etc. They don't want to forgo all that for the small amount of money babysitting for 2 hours would bring in.

Its not irresponsible if you have after-school commitments. They just need to be upfront with it.

Most SAHP's want to focus on their kids and its not worth the $15-20 an hour someone would pay at most, when you have to feed the kids and that means your kids miss out on things. A lot of sports are also right after school, ours are at 4. I find it offensive that the expectation from people like you is a SAHP does it as a favor to you for little pay while you earn a good income.

Of course, they are offended, as many are professional/degreed and being offered very little to know money as its expected you do it as a favor. If I wanted to work, I'd get a paid job earning much more. I am home for my kids needs only.
