Where do you go for information about your rights? RSS feed

My mother is a nanny and I’m always appalled and meeting ppl she knows who know nothing about their rights.

Such as working overtime and not getting overtime pay even tho they’re not a livein, lack of workers compensation insurance, never taking sick or annual leave and working two jobs (nanny for multiple kids and housekeeper). The employers are highly paid doctors and lawyers who are clearly taking advantage. It’s so sad. Many have viable claims but don’t come forward bc they’re undocumented, don’t have time to pursue a claim, or just too worn down to do anything.

Are there organizations who come to popular nanny meeting grounds and pass out info brochures? Or share nanny contract samples, etc.

I think the National Domestic Workers Alliance has sample contracts.

But I think they're primarily an advocacy organization.

The state labor website is always a good resource too.

I don’t know of specific resources, but being aware of the rights and laws is part of the responsibility of being a nanny. While it is the employer’s responsibility to follow all tax law, it would be wise for a nanny to have a basic understanding of tax law related to household employees.

An undocumented nanny has no rights. I would not take the risk of being deported, although it’d probably be a pain for her employer too. Otherwise look up the labor laws - they are publicly available at the relevant agency.
