Short-term, full-time nanny? RSS feed

Hello- we will likely need a full time nanny for a few months this fall/early winter to take my 2.5 year old to/from morning preschool, help out in his classroom 1x a week (the rest of the mornings would be off) then watch him in the afternoons. I am a SAHM so we won’t need care long-term, but I have recently been diagnosed with health issues that will involve a lot of appointments/hospitalization this fall, so will need full time help roughly September - December (and then would be open to continued part-time help after that). Does anybody have advice how best to find someone like this? I imagine many experienced nannies might want a longer-term job, but am not sure if there are particular agencies I should contact or places I should post the job listing. We are located in NW DC (Glover Park area) if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Can you clarify? Will you be only needing the nanny a couple hours in the morning and afternoon but paying for the full day?

You should check with the preschool to make sure this is allowed. No other advice. Good luck!

OP here - I have confirmed that it is ok with the school. And I would need the nanny for the full day (roughly 8:30-5:30) and would pay for the full day, but they would have some mornings off (to balance out that one morning a week they would be doing extra work caring for multiple kids in the classroom).

OP I did a gig like this for 3 months once.
The Nanny job I had ended suddenly and I temp job to figure out what I wanted to do. I decided not to go back to Nannying but it was nice to have the 3 months of work while I was figuring out a plan.
I don’t know where to suggest you look but just know there are people out there who want temp situations.

Wouldn't the nanny need to be fingerprinted and background-cheeked at the preschool? I wouldn't want some strange person caring for my kid at preschool without that.

I’m going to assume it’s a co-op preschool. It’s expected parents go in and help on a rotating basis. They’re not left unsupervised with kids and don’t all get background checked.

OP, if you cannot get any referrals from people you already know who have young children - then your best bet would be to contact a few local agencies.

I am sure they can help you find a Nanny who would be interested in a temp position.

I would go w/a Nanny agency since they likely will do the majority of the vetting to ensure you find someone reliable, responsible as well as experienced + trustworthy.

I strongly would discourage searching someone online since any & every one w/internet access can go on any childcare website and label themselves a professional Nanny and lie about references, experience, etc.
And add as many years of experience as they desire.

Good luck in finding someone soon -
You are wise to start your search now!

Ignore this fear-mongering poster. They keep pushing nanny agencies on every thread possible. They must be with an agency.

Maybe so.

But their take on looking for a Nanny online is on point.
Anyone with internet access can pretend they are a professional nanny and make up how many years of childcare experience they have.
Care is a scam.

You are an honest a person and have a good heart
Some employers they only need short term and they lie to nannies that they need long term and they come up with exuses so why treating nannies with disrespect.
