Au pair Bathroom RSS feed

Is your au pair's bathroom on a different floor? Our au pair has an en-suite bathroom. When the LLC came to inspect he said that was rare and unnecessary. It works best for us though right now. Anyway, I was surprised to find out his au pair's bathroom is on a senate floor. There is a toilet on her floor but the full bathroom (i.e., shower) is on a different level.

I wonder how many families do this. We are looking at new homes and are considering the options. My goal is for our au pairs to have their own bathroom but it is looking like that may not work down the line.

Our AP's room and adjacent (but not en suite) bath are on the same floor as our child's room and she shares a bath with the child. This isnt the best set up, but also not the worst. What your LCC describes seems like it might turn off many au pairs, especially given how they compare their situations with others. Imagine as a young woman having to walk through the house in a robe to take a shower, vs. having an en suite.

The best set up is the "au pair" or "mother in law" suite, so if you can $ swing it, do it! If not, I think it really needs to be an adjacent bath, not one in another part of the house, to make it an acceptable set up for most AP candidates these days.

p.s. I think maybe what the LCC was trying to say is that it isnt REQUIRED by the program to have it on the same floor. That is likely correct, but still not good for marketing your family to potential APs

It’s rare and unnecessary? Why does that matter? En-suite is better so what’s the problem.

It’s not rare imo. I shared a bathroom with the kids when I was an au pair 20 years ago. Most of my friends in the suburbs had a bedroom and bathroom in the basement.

Our AP had an en suite. I saw several recent Au pairs complaining about sharing a bathroom with a kid, which I thought was a little petty.
