Do you think the going rate for a nanny share is the same as for two kids of the same family? For example, my friend is in a nanny share with her 2 year old and a neighbor’s 3 year old. They pay a total of $40/hour. Is that what I would expect to pay if hiring a nanny for my two kids (3 and 1)?

No, it should be based per child, not half.

About 30./hr is what you pay for one family with two children.

A nanny share is a bit more than two kids in the same family, but not dramatically. We've done both shares and had our own nanny. Our current nanny takes care of our two kids right now, for $26 an hour. We'll move back to a share later this year, and at that point, I'd anticipate paying a total of $28 or $30 an hour (so $14 or $15 a family).

So yeah, if your sister is paying $40 for a share (that's absurdly high, btw), then the equivalent for your own nanny for two kids is prob $35 or $36.

But again, that's super high. The going rate is somewhere in the $25-$30 range for your own nanny in DC.

$40 for share is standard and not super high. $20 per hr per family is cheap for the care you get with nanny share. You pay less for your own 2 kids, $32-36. PP, you get what you pay for. I do not want to say here, nor can I imagine, what sort of desperate person works as a nanny share for $30 in DC. I guess it would be their first job as a nanny, or they do not have legal status, or take pay under the table. Or all of the above.

A lot depends on the number of hours, whether there are special needs or housekeeping, etc. When a nanny has to navigate two sets of adults instead of one, the price is somewhat higher to compensate. Please keep in mind that minimum wage in DC is $15; do you really want anyone who might choose to go work fast food to decide that they'll apply for your position, or do you want someone experienced and/or educated, someone who know what to do and loves children? MD rates are a bit lower, and VA rates can be significantly lower the further out from DC the position might be.

It totally depends on the nanny, and how much you’d like her to care for your child.

Nanny here. I’m finishing with 1 family with 2 kids at $28/hr in dc. And I’ve finalized my nanny share contract to start a nanny share in a couple months at $34/hr in DC. (That $17/hr per family) and DC minimum wage will increase to $17/hr on May 1 2023)

nannies, do not act foolish and agree to less than a daycare center weekly rate for share. $17 per hr per family is super cheap. You can get $40 pretty easily if you have great local references from long term clients.

$40 hourly is what I’ve been getting paid since last year. I work in Bethesda, both kids just turned 1; families pay my health insurance premium, holidays, 3 weeks of PTO.

This sounds about right for the DC area.
