Have had two nanny candidates now say that their rate is $30/hour for one kid. NW DC. At that rate, what should be the minimum qualifications? What would you expect if you're paying that much?
|
They should know how to do their job. Let her tag along for one day. Day two - she’s on her own - and very successful. |
^ Of course this assumes that you hired well. Due diligence on your part is essential. |
Clean backyard check, a degree in child related field or over ten years of nanny experience. Child laundry, nanny log, daily outtings, feedings, nap schedule, first aid / Cpr certified! |

Fluent English, college degree, teaching and nanny experience and great references. Most American college graduates are starting at $30 and above. |
Our nanny started at $30 with a college degree in liberal arts (from a better university than DH or I attended) and all the coursework done for her masters in Early Childhood Development. Seven years nanny experience with a few years of preschool teaching. Amazing references from two prior families that she is still very close to.
We just got a great feel for her in her interviews and correspondence. Older, easy going, and smiling. She came in and asked to wash her hands and then asked to hold my newborn. She held him happily for a two hour interview (standing and rocking when necessary). Nanny has been with us for 3.5 years and a second child. She also lives alone (helpful during Covid) and is within walking distance of our home. |
I don’t think you’d get her at just $30 today. |

That's basics, you are easy to please, LOL |
Really? She was the only candidate we interviewed who did. And do people still use “LOL”? |
+1. And the lol-ing poster clearly missed that the woman had a masters degree in ECD. |
Your poor grammar in one statement tells us all we need to know about you, PP. Talk about “basics”! |
Sorry hun but the $30 nanny is now the old $20-25 nanny. If you have one kid, yes you can get a degree for $30. But 2-3 young kids, it’s $35+. |
Totally agree $30 is the new $25. $30 should yield you a high quality candidate, up to date on current childcare practices and knowledgable about child development. Fluent in English, seeking to work on the books, a long term track record with previous families, clean background and driving record. |
For the love of anything holy, only idiots pay for a degree in ECE. It actually is more of a red flag than anything - why would you want someone dumb enough to think that degree was worthwhile watching your child?
I’ll take a twenty year old gap year student at a real school with actual career aspirations or someone who managed to raise adult children I admire over any ECE major, any day. |
