Potential Nanny doesn’t really need the job. RSS feed

We’re in the process of hiring a nanny for our infant. We narrowed it down to one candidate who was a perfect match. She’s educated, experienced and we really clicked.

We recently realized she’s married to a man who works in the same industry as DH. DH has never met the man, he he’s well known and makes significantly more than we do combined.

I don’t know why but it just rubbed me the wrong way. We initially offered 2X an hour and she said her rate was 2X an hour ($2 an hour increase) and we agreed. Knowing she lives in a house worth twice what ours is worth, this just seems…wrong?

I do think due to her experience her requested pay makes sense, but I’d feel much better paying someone who actually needed the money. I feel like this is just a way to spend her time vs. a real need.

What?

If she is qualified and you guys click, hire her. Maybe she's about to leave her husband. Maybe they are in horrible debt.
Answer this question: Are you a charity or are you looking for the best for your child?

This is so wrong on so many levels.

How do you know that he makes more $ than you. I do think, she doesn't need the job; if you are saying she lives better than you. It's up to you hire her. Just it would feel a little weird for you.

This is so ridiculous, OP. Millions of people work because they love the work and not because they need it.

Our wonderful nanny of the last 3.5 years is retired from her first career, does not need to work at all with her pension and savings, and lives in a better neighborhood than we do! She’s never once been late or called in sick! She loves her job and my kids.

I have been a nanny for 20 years. Saved every penny and have a high net worth. Pretty sure it’s higher then my employers. But they don’t know that. I still like having a job. Yes I could retire but I like having a purpose.

Same here. Ten years salary saved and invested

She told you the hourly rate at which she values her labor. You agreed. Her husband’s job has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

You are absurd.

Maybe they're supporting other family members, or putting neices through college, or maybe she just really enjoys babies, or maybe when she doesn't work she gets depressed, or maybe a thousand other things that are irrelevant and none of your business.

You're not hiring someone to create jobs - you're not Dolly Parton - you're hiring someone because you need someone to care for your baby.

So, you think she should work for free or much less because her husband has a good income? Does your employer tell you that you should make less because you are married?

Op, are you not comfortable employing someone you perceive as being of your same socio-economic class?

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. She must feel weird to hire someone as her employee; who actually would be in best economic position than her. She would feel like like she is hiring someone on same level than her. Who knows.

None of this would matter to me if she was competent and professional.
