We start start in March for August arrival.

It never happened to us (we are on AP #6). It takes about a month to interview. Then we use the time to get to know each other better beforehand. Other families may have a different approach.

You need to leave time for them to get their visa, so the minimum is three months for out of country.

Think of it this way. Other families are working up to 6 months out and may select more qualified candidates. You get wheoever is left. Doesn't mean there won't be great candidates for you though.

is searching harder post covid or about the same?

I got my best au pair 7 weeks out and my worst one 6 months out. I usually do 4 months out. This time around might try 2-3 months out. I don’t think there is a best time to look.
